About Us

Hello, I’m Jez Frith, and I run Dog ABC – The Animal Behaviour Clinic.
My goal is simple: to help owners understand why their dog behaves in a certain way, how those behaviours have developed, and how to use positive, evidence-based training to achieve lasting change.

For over 28 years, I’ve worked with dogs of all breeds, ages, and temperaments — helping owners manage behavioural challenges and build stronger, more balanced relationships with their dogs.

Experience and Approach

After graduating from university with a degree in Animal Behaviour, I began working directly with owners and their dogs across Cheshire. Over the years, I’ve developed trusted partnerships with many veterinary practices throughout the North West, who continue to refer clients to me for behavioural consultations and training support.

When I first began, I focused solely on behavioural consultations. However, I soon noticed that many issues stemmed from a lack of early socialisation and basic training. To address this, I collaborated with local veterinary practices to create puppy socialisation classes — one-off sessions designed to educate owners about the importance of socialisation, the do’s and don’ts, and how to handle issues before they become long-term problems.

My approach has always been about training the owner as much as the dog. I’m often heard saying:

“The owner’s not always the cause, but they are the fix!”

Many behavioural challenges arise simply from misunderstanding — owners not realising what their dog needs, what they’re communicating, or where their boundaries lie. By teaching owners how to read and respond to their dogs effectively, we can make real, lasting changes that benefit both dog and human.

I take pride in offering pragmatic, non-judgmental, and easy-to-follow guidance, giving owners the confidence to implement training strategies and see genuine improvement in their dog’s behaviour.

Areas of Expertise

Over nearly three decades, I’ve helped owners manage and overcome a wide variety of behavioural and training issues, including:

  • Phobias and nervous responses

  • Aggression (various forms)

  • Noise sensitivities

  • Possessive behaviours

  • Livestock chasing

  • Recall issues

  • General manners and obedience training

Whether through behaviour modification, puppy training, or obedience work, my aim is always the same — to help you develop a dog you can truly be proud of.

Dog ABC Residential Training & Boarding

In 2024, we proudly expanded Dog ABC with the opening of our Residential Training and Boarding Facility.
Set within four acres of beautiful Cheshire countryside, our location offers ideal environments and routines for effective, immersive training.

We’re also home to a small menagerie — including sheep, hens, and a very dog-friendly goat — making it the perfect setting for livestock and environmental training.

Since opening our doors, we’ve welcomed a variety of residential dogs for training and boarding. Once owners see how relaxed, content, and well-behaved their dogs become here, they rarely consider boarding anywhere else! (A few have even joked about wanting to stay themselves — though we’re not quite ready for two-legged guests just yet.)

Meet Sam

Supporting the day-to-day running of Dog ABC is Sam, who plays a vital role in the care and exercise of our canine guests.
While I oversee training programmes, Sam takes charge of bookings, paperwork, pick-ups and drop-offs, and ensures every dog enjoys our signature 5-star experience during their stay.

Our Commitment

At Dog ABC, we’re passionate about helping owners and dogs live happier, more harmonious lives together. Whether you’re dealing with a specific behavioural concern, bringing home a new puppy, or seeking professional residential training, we’re here to guide and support you every step of the way.
